Methyl Bromide is a very effective fumigant which has been used for many years, but is also an ozone depleting chemical. Under the terms of the Montreal Protocol – an international agreement to limit emissions and protect the Ozone Layer surrounding the earth – it was to be phased out by 2005 in developed countries.
Methyl bromide is however effective against a broad range of species and has a fast action. For this reason it is still the required fumigant for many quarantine authorities. For the time being, specific quarantine use of this gas is exempt from controls.
